Community & Sustainability

At Steelport, we have been engaging with local communities, community-based organizations and Indigenous peoples since 2022 to take their input into account and ensure the development serves the needs of the City.

We have a Memorandum of Understanding with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation Business Corporation, and have ongoing dialogue that recognizes their treaty rights and policies. We also continue regular engagement with the Six Nations of the Grand River, through updates and discussions related to development master planning.

Through ongoing engagement, the community emphasized that waterfront access and public space are essential to Steelport, and this commitment has been preserved. We also launched A Healthier Hamilton, a long-term charitable giving programme partnering with local community organizations, having donated over $200K to groups including Hamilton Health Sciences, YMCA, YWCA, the Hamilton Sports Group Foundation, the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, Supercrawl, and Mantle.

Community Advisory Committee

Steelport’s Community Advisory Committee (CAC) is a non-political advisory forum that brings together community representatives from business and industry organizations, environmental and conservation groups, neighbourhood and community hubs, active transportation and public realm advocates, arts and creative sector organizations, post-secondary institutions, organized labour, community benefit organizations, local residents and Ward 3 & 4 councillors, and relevant City of Hamilton departments (such as planning, public health, transportation, and the film office).

The CAC has met during key milestones and will continue to meet at regular intervals during the ongoing development and operation of Steelport.

  • April 30, 2024, The Cotton Factory
Introduced members to Steelport and the CAC's role, confirmed the Terms of Reference and discussed early project considerations and the approach to broader public engagement.
  • October 21, 2024, The Cotton Factory
Provided a project and planning-process update, introduced the McMaster CityLAB project and discussed programming and activation opportunities for Steelport's future public spaces.
  • March 24, 2025, Bus tour of Steelport
Hosted a bus tour to give CAC members a firsthand understanding of the site's scale, industrial context, and existing conditions.
  • April 8, 2025, Virtual meeting
Discussed observations from the site tour, provided an update on the revised planning submission and project timeline, and explored future community-engagement opportunities.
  • April 8, 2026, Hamilton Stadium
Provided updates on current planning applications and introduced potential data centre development and an integrated energy strategy for the site.

Broader public engagement has included:

  • A public open house held on June 24, 2024, at the Steelport site, attended by over 100 community members. The open house introduced the Steelport story, planning process, vision and master plan.
  • A pop-up at Open Streets on King on June 22, 2025, where the project team engaged approximately 110 people. The pop-up informed residents of the Steelport project through visuals and informal conversations, while providing opportunities to ask questions, share feedback and connect for further discussion.
  • The commissioning of local Hamilton artists to create a public art installation on two stacked shipping containers at the intersection of Industrial Drive and Depew Street. This initiative reflects the importance of public art across Slate’s portfolio and serves as an early opportunity to incorporate the spirit of Hamilton into the site’s redevelopment.

Slate Asset Management remains committed to sustaining a transparent and collaborative planning process that ensures Steelport delivers lasting benefits for all Hamiltonians.

Sustainability

Steelport embeds industry-leading Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies and practices in its master plan. This approach enhances value and reduces environmental impact while providing meaningful spaces for tenants, communities, and local workers.

Our ESG priorities include tracking carbon reduction targets, construction waste diversion, workforce equity, innovative mobile solutions, public open space commitments, and transparency, among other elements.
